  • I either need to make $2,000 in the next three weeks or save it somehow.   My car needs an expensive repair and I have to buy an airline ticket.  I was going to sell a couple stocks but the market is not cooperating.  This has never happened.  Usually, I keep enough cash on hand that if the market takes a tumble it’s annoying but I’ve already sold at a good price.  I can’t sell anything now because everything is down.I’ve been eating out of the freezer, only buying what I have to.  If you have any great ideas about how to save money I’d appreciate it. Tonight I made popcorn for dinner and went through the drive-thru for a mocha perk.  Fast food is so cheap but I’m not going to make that a habit.

I do have one idea.  I pruned the hell out of my wisteria tree and when I was on vacation I saw these branches — I can’t think of the name of a pliable branch – bent in the shape of a heart all over town.  They’d been trained, wrapped around a green frame in the shape of a heart.  I could do that and I don’t think I’d need the plastic frame.  The were stuck in a pot, probably planted with a vine.  I have at least a hundred containers, all sizes, from the landscaping I did at the last house.  I’m just thinking out loud here.  I’d need dirt.  And a cheap vine.  The farmer’s market is starting soon.  Any ideas of  for a fast-growing, inexpensive vine?  Hey, I know, what about ivy?

  • That’s funny — tonight I ate popcorn for dinner and drank a chai tea.

Have you seen the movie, “The Secret”?  Supposedly, if you expect to$2,000 within the next three weeks, it will manifest itself.  It’ all about the Law of Attraction.  Or have you ever heard of the “Lucky 8″ in your wallet?   My husband and I were told that if you write the number 8 on a piece of paper and put it in your wallet, you will gain wealth (though not necessarily material wealth, depending on your situation) some time soon.  My husband decided it wouldn’t hurt to try, so he taped an eight inside his money clip.  Within the next 6 months he acquired over $22,000 (legally!), which he did not expect!  Of course there’s no way of knowing whether those kinds of superstitions really work, but it was fun trying.

Good luck.  I think that the ivy idea is a good one.

  • I heard you are supposed to sell your stocks that are tanking, but most people will hang on to them emotionally because we hate to lose.  Check all your insurance policies.  Car and house.  we just redid ours and saved $700 a year.  wow!

and give_me_ten is the writer site…say yes.

  • I think the little ivey thing rocks, go to the local nursery to see what is available for the vine.  Swashbuckette asks if you’ve see “The Secret”, if not you can watch it online for $4.95…www.the secret.tv and worth it for the message..marilyn

  • But she already told you the Secret, so why watch?  Some days I really believe it, other days I look around and know it just ain’t so!  It’s nothing new, this Law of Attraction – just another somebody making $$ off the power of positive expectations.  I wonder if those people dying in …..ooops, guess this is one of those days I don’t believe.

I swear, some days I know, absolutely know, it is truth.

  • Selling stuff you don’t need/use/want is the obvious… Maybe a big piece of furniture? Books? All those pots? ;) Cut all the extras off everything else: tv, phone, cell phone, Internet. Check to see if you could lower any insurance you have by going with a higher deductible. Cancel all magazine subscriptions and request refunds for the unused portions. Make a quick run through your checkbook and credit card statements for the last few months and mark things as optional or required. Then see how much you spent on optional things. It would be hard to do it for the long haul but if you’re just trying to cut to the bone for a short period it’s easier. Just eliminate every single optional thing and you’ll be amazed, unless you live pretty simply already. I mean no dancing, no drinks, no drive through coffees, NOTHING that is not a necessity. Eating out of the freezer and pantry is great and just go bare bones with anything you need to buy.

  • Gardening is out of my arena. Ellen ^ has some great ideas. Is there and Aldi’s near you? Shopping there will save money and their products are good for the most part. They have produce too.

When on a very tight budget I used to get their whole chickens and use them for several different meals. They are like 55 cents a pound and for three bucks one of those birds could stretch to three meals.

Here’s a weird thought. Have you any experience reading tarot cards? Some psychic fairs I have been to do not require the readers to pay fees because they are the draw into whatever bookshop is holding the fair. They stay and go casually and at between 20-50 a reading they can make some good money depending on the traffic. But it is a drain on the energies and may not sit well with other beliefs. But if you look at it as entertainment then it could work.

  • Thanks for introducing yourself — I hope that I’ll be seeing a lot of you through a mutual friend’s site . . .

Good luck on your fundraising / fundsaving. A couple of times in the past, when we’ve encountered unmanageable expenses, we’ve made use of those zero interest balance transfer offers from credit card companies. You’ve got to pay a small fee for this, and you have to make sure that there are no other expenses on the card to which you’re transferring the balance (you have to pay off any prior balances before you can take care of this transferred debt). It’s not the greatest solution, but if you know that you’ll be able to accrue the necessary funds over the course of the next year (and unable to do it within two weeks), it’s a reasonable backup plan . . .

  • RYC: My Missy, she’s sealed the deal on a brand new home, it is the model for a subdivision that isn’t selling anything, they want to purge this one below retail!! She asked them to change the lighting fixtures and fans, also the black appliances and black sink in the kitchen…they agreed.  She will close in 30-45 days, she’s so excited and I for her…marilyn

  • prudy…it’s me…patti, seriously…accept the friend thing.   if you are still unsure, go to my regular site and i will back this up.

  • How neat, that would be a creative and fun way to make money!

  • whoohoo…done!

  • Depends what climate area you are in as to what vines would do best for you.

Stuff like The Secret, Lucky 8, Astrology and whatever make me shiver. I firmly believe we are the masters (mistresses?) of our own fate, and that luck, like shit, just happens.  Otherwise why bother working?  :That is unless you are a professional astrologer, an author, a tv preacher or someone else who makes money out of purveying groundless hope.

  • Thank you, Petra.  They make it sound real easy.

  • You’re way too smart, creative and energetic to let a little slide in the stockmarket get you down. A hundred containers – go for it. xo
