  • Does anyone know why, even if I go (in Word) to make it single spaced, I still get it double spaced?  And why when I hit tab, if I try to edit in xanga, nothing happens?

  • Alas, the wonders of editing in xanga are still a mystery to me. It seems to work differently every time I go to edit or format anything. I’ll ask around…there are some people seem to have this stuff mastered. If my factfinding mission turns anything up, I’ll check in. I’d put more of my creative stuff up, but the formatting is such a pain that I gave up after a while.

  • To single-space, hold the shift key when you hit the enter key.  (This works in Word and Office, too.)  I don’t know how long it took my son to figure that out for me. hehehe  And Tab just doesn’t work in Xanga. *grumble, grumble*

    I see I missed your post…dammit.  Good thing it’s up where I can read at my leisure.

    ryc:  I keep forgetting that I have a second setting on my camera for close-up shots.  My son wanted to take a pic of his eye, to show someone his eye color (!!) last night, and I remembered…for probably only the second time…that close ups come out better in the other setting. ::rollseyes::  I’ll get it, yet!  *sprinkling positivity among my thoughts of incompetence! lol*

    I love you…GFW

  • I don’t bother real editing in xanga.  For the years I’ve been here it doesn’t much work.  Whenever I hit enter it’s always like double space.   If I have to edit its a complete cut/paste kinda thing.

  • I have all kinds of problems on PCs running windows if I try to post & can’t do things like change the font colour, etc., and none on my Mac running firefox… & Xanga isn’t set up for Apple, go figure… so I can’t help you. But I do sympathize! xo

  • In MS Word, click on Tools, select Options, then click the Spelling and Grammar tab. In the Grammar section, click Setting and under Require, choose the number of “Spaces requred between sentences”. My is set to 1. Yours is probably set at 2….

    As for editing on Xanga: Tabs are not a normal feature in HTML, so tabs are not recognized by most editors. Usually, when you hit Tab, the cursor will move to the next “selection” within the page. If you want to insert a space of a certain length, then you have to “tell” the browser what to do. Previously, I had a transparent image (.gif file) that was about 15 points long, and would insert that as the first character in a paragraph. But that became a drage when I wanted to change the length. I subsequently learned to make all my paragraph indented by using Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) which you can easily insert into your header in Look and Feel. Insert:

    p. {text-indent:10pt;}

    This means that the first line in every paragraph–and in the Xanga editor, everytime you hit the enter key, it will create a paragraph, not a line break–will be indented by 10 points.

    You can manipulate other features as well, such as margins (margin-top:0pt; margin-bottom: 3pt;), text alignment (text-align:left;), line spacing (line-height:140%;), font size (font-size:9pt;), and font-family (font-family:verdana,arial,helvetica;). Font “family” is the hierarchy of fonts a browser on a given computer will use. I set mine to Verdana because I think that it is the easiest to read on a web page. If a computer does not support this font, then it will default to Arial, and if not Arial, then in turn to Helvetica. On a normal website, if a font is not specified, the computer used by the reader will display a page with its own default, usually Helvetica or Arial. But Xanga is not a normal website. Look and Feel will let you choose the font you want the reader to see….

    Remember: if you do this, then EVERY paragraph will be indented. So I also have a “noindent” paragraph. But you have to specify this everytime you want to use it. If you want to know more about this, let me know.

    Anyway, I didn’t mean to get so long and boring, but i am personally fascinated with HTML, and love to manipulate these pages so my site will look unique–but not so unique that it takes a few minutes to upload, like so many of the sites the the younger people put up with all manner of background and music.

    If you have any question, don’t hesitate to ask. Of course, this might not be what you wanted to know in the first place! Oh nooooooooooooooooooooo!

  • Oops, forgot to mention, the indent or anything else in the CSS will not show up in your edit box, but will show up on you page when you “Submit” it.

  • No one has mentioned it, but chains of spaces (like this ) are usually the best way to tab. If you type a “tab” character into notepad and cut/paste it here, it will also work.
